The trial judge in the treason case against Dr. Kizza Besigye and 22 other suspects, Vincent Rwamisazi Kagaba, is sick and due to travel to South Africa for treatment. The Secretary to the Judiciary, Ralph Ocan, yesterday confirmed that the judge was sick, but declined to say what kind of sickness he was suffering from. “As to when he should fly out, it is not for me to say. The Medical Board to decide on that,” Ocan said. However, sources at the High Court said Kagaba was suffering from a stiff neck and severe backache.

Ejua urges

East African cross-border transport stakeholders should come up with concrete recommendations on how the partner states can reduce freight costs, the transport state minister has said. Simon Ejua, while opening the East African Community Cross-Border Commercial Transport Conference at Hotel Africana yesterday, said freight and bureaucracy costs accounted for more than 30% of the total value of goods in the region.

Seventy leave

Seventy Ugandan teachers are set to leave for Southern Sudan next week after securing lucrative employment with Assistance Mission Africa (AMA), a Nairobi-based NGO. The 70 are part of hundreds of teachers needed to revive the education system following more than two decades of civil war in the region, a statement on the AMA website said.

Bodaboda cyclists in the city have been given 30 days to acquire operational licences. A meeting between RDC Stanley Kinyata, Kampala City Council, the Police, Ministry of Works and bodaboda managers, resolved that from August 10 cyclists without licenses will not be allowed to operate.

Primary school teachers have finally received their June salaries. A random survey of schools in Kampala, Wakiso and other neighbouring districts yesterday showed that they received the salaries last week.
