THE Uganda electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) has acquired two transformers worth $0.5m (sh1b) to improve the quality and reliability of power supply in Kampala North.

The 132/11kv 32/40 MVA big capacity transformers from EMCO, India will replace the old 15/20MVA transformers, due to the sharp load growth at the Kampala North substation.

They will improve power capacity and supply to the 11kV feeders of Makerere University, Mulago, Wandegeya, Gayaza, Kawempe, Kololo and Nakulabye and minimise outage time on the feeders during maintenance works.

The principal maintenance engineer, James Mwine, yesterday said UETCL, under its strategic plan, would implement several projects to improve power supply aimed at meeting the anticipated load growth in Kampala and other regions along its 132kV network.

“The investments are part of UETCL corporate business plan to improve the quality and reliability of power supply and enhance the efficient operation on the transmission grid in order to meet the growing demand for electricity,” he said.

Mwine, flanked by the company’s public relations officer, Kenneth Otim, said UETCL had also installed two new 11kV circuit breakers to upgrade and handle the new bigger transformer capacity.

He said one of the 10/15MVA transformers currently at Kampala North would be relocated to Namungona 33kV substation to upgrade capacity and increase power supply in the area.
