ROTARY International president William Boyd will visit Uganda next month to recognise Rotarians in the country for providing humanitarian needs over the years.

Rotary district governor 9200 Dr. Francis Tusubira yesterday said, “It is not only an opportunity to showcase the work of Rotary, but also to attract new funding to help our poor communities.”

Tusubira was addressing journalists at Communication House in Kampala.

Boyd, visiting Uganda from August 22-25, will tour charity projects supported by Rotary Foundation, preside over a dinner and cultural gala and meet students in tertiary institutions (rotaractors) and students aged between 14 and 18 (interactors).

He will also meet President Yoweri Museveni, Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi and parliamentarians.

Boyd began his term on July 1, with an emphasis on urging ordinary people to unite in helping humankind.

Founded in 1905, Rotary International helps communities in accessing clean water, health facilities and cares for disadvantaged children and provides other services.

District 9200 is made up of Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

Tusubira, the 5th governor to come from Uganda in the 85-year history of District 9200, said Rotary Foundation had earmarked $1.6m to fund new projects in Lyantonde and Rukungiri districts, northern Uganda and the school of dental health at Mulago hospital.

He urged the public to develop a spirit of helping those in need.

“Back then, everyone, irrespective of whether he or she was your relative, would offer help and support. These were simple values, which we have lost. If they were integrated in society, the world would be a much better place for everyone,” Tusubira said.

Present at the function were Rotarian J.B. Walusimbi and the district Rotary secretary, Steven Mwanje.
