SIR — I have read in the press that the ministry of education is to start a programme whereby higher institutions of learning will admit talented sportsmen and women to take up sports science courses. However, I believe it was just excitement caused by the recent victory of Police FC and athletes medalists.

The government cannot chew more than it can swallow. If it has failed to recruit the few graduates of sports science still roaming the streets, why waste resources training more?

I think it is lack of
manpower planning For at least one student to complete a course, it costs the government not less than sh8m. The students future might be ruined if they don’t think twice. Though talented in sports, they can as well become doctors or lawyers, for example, other than becoming jobless ‘sports scientists’ for the sake of it.

It is a shame a lot has been said about the lost glory of Uganda’s sports, yet even the few professionals in this field have been neglected. Up to now all the graduates are still roaming the streets. I should know because I am one of the pioneers of this course. The government should first employ those on the streets and then if there is demand, admit more.
