State minister for ethics Dr. Nsaba Buturo yesterday lashed out at Parliament for considering legislation and legalisation of the sex trade.

The Deputy Speaker, Rebecca Kadaga, on Monday told a Ghana parliamentary delegation they were considering debating the legality of sex workers and their work as part of the struggle to check the spread of HIV.

Appearing yesterday before the parliamentary committee on presidential affairs chaired by Mary Karooro Okurut (Bushenyi Woman), Buturo (right) said, “It is deplorable for legislators to advocate the trade of selling our bodies. Sex trade is a door to the spread of HIV.”

He was responding to concerns raised by Winfred Kiiza (Kasese) over the increasing HIV/AIDS prevalence, despite efforts to check the pandemic.

“With prostitution, our people are becoming more infected. These are not sex workers but prostitutes that have lost their way. This is loss of morality and it is deplorable to see parliament engaging in such debate instead of stopping it outrightly,” he added.
