CONSTRUCTION of the long-awaited Bujagali hydro-power dam begins in February 2007, energy minister Daudi Migereko said yesterday.

“The contracts for construction of Bujagali will be awarded in September and negotiations for funding will reach close somewhere in February next year and construction will start.

“The President has repeatedly pointed out that whether we get money from outside or not, Bujagali must be constructed,” Migereko said at a press briefing at the Uganda Media Centre.

He said developing Bujagali will be done concurrently with the development of Karuma hydro-power dam.

President Yoweri museveni has blamed the stalling of the Bujagali project on opposition MPs in the 7th Parliament who blocked its funding from donors.

Migereko, flanked by energy state minister Simon D’Ujanga and the ministry permanent secretary, Kabagambe Kaliisa, was briefing journalists on government strategy on managing the energy crisis.

On oil exploration in western Uganda and West Nile, Kaliisa said the Government would get 70% of the proceeds from oil while the private companies would get 30%.

Four areas with oil prospects have been licensed to private companies, Kaliisa revealed.

In the mid-term measures to curb power shortage, Migereko said two more thermal diesel generators were to be bought to add 100 MW on the national grid.

D’Ujanga said that by April next year, day load shedding will stop. He lamented that due to load shedding during working hours, Uganda’s GDP had dropped from 6% to 4%.
