The Inspector General of Police, Maj.Gen. Kale Kayihura, has revealed that he has received death threat mails over his purge on criminals in the force.
Kayihura said he would remain steadfast in his job and in purging the force of “criminal officers” in spite of the threats.
“I cannot continue with criminals in the force. I am going to clean the force even if I have been receiving letters from criminal officers threatening me with death. They cannot deter me. I will continue with the fight,” he said.
Kayihura made the remarks on Friday shortly after a function at the Police Headquarters in Kibuli, where he commended two police officers for successfully investigating the disappearance and murder of five-year-old Edwin Muguluma.
Kayihura, however, hastened to add that not the entire force was bad.
“There are some good officers in the force. I keep identifying them everyday,” he said.
Speaking earlier at the function, Kayihura said he had been demonised and called harsh by sections in the force because of his clamp down on criminal elements.
He said they were investigating Rakai district police commander Flugensio Betongyeza, who had risen through the
ranks allegedly while using false names.
He said the nation was desirous of a reputable force, adding, “Uganda deserves a real police force not one of thugs. If purging the force of criminals is being harsh, then I plead guilty,” he said.
He said the Police would start identifying exemplary officers and rewarding them with promotions and cash awards.
“In future we will identify them and reward them materially. It should not only be words but materially. Whoever does well will be rewarded with promotion,” he said.
“It is only through having a clean police force that delivers and which the public appreciates, that the police will be able to attract more resources,” he said.
