Fraud case

Former presidential aide Naava Nabagesera’s close associate, Moses Nsubuga Ssempebwa, accused of extorting millions of shillings from several individuals, was charged yesterday. The two are accused of obtaining sh44m from people with promises of jobs in the UK. Nsubuga appeared before Buganda Road Court magistrate Olive Kazarwe and denied the charges. He was released on a non-cash bond of sh5m.


AYA halts
KAMPALA
The AYA hotel project on Nakasero hill has stalled due to difficulties in mobilising financial and material resources. AYA proprietor Mohammed Hamid, however, said yesterday it was a temporary setback and work would resume this week. He said he returned from Europe on Monday, where he had gone to mobilise US$90m (sh166b).


177 pass ICPAU
KAMPALA
A total of 177 candidates successfully passed the June 2006 Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) examinations. The chairman of the Public Accountants Examinations Board, Joseph Baliddawa, said 1,670 CPA-U and 868 ATC-U candidates sat for the examinations. Assistant commissioner for education Sarah Namuli released the results on Monday.


Police meets
KAMPALA
The police are to meet officials from private security organisations, during which measures of ensuring the latter are not sources of insecurity will be devised. Inspector General of Police Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura yesterday said, “We want to establish a forum in which we can discuss security matters.” This follows an increase in crimes suspected to be perpetrated by security guards.

Kobil raps
Kobil Uganda yesterday condemned the Monday night attack on a Kobil filling station in Bugolobi, in which four people were shot dead by unknown thugs. “Management of Kobil Uganda and Bugolobi Service Station condemn this brutal killing of innocent young men in the strongest terms possible,” publicist Joseph Kisembo said in a statement.
