HER Majesty the Queen of England, Elizabeth II will pay a three-day State visit to Uganda prior to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), a Parliament committee heard yesterday.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sam Kutesa, told the committee on foreign affairs that the Queen would visit Queen Elizabeth National Park before opening CHOGM.

Briefing the committee, Kutesa noted that Uganda was using the opportunity to complete phase 1 of State House in Entebbe where the Queen will stay during her visit. He said sh65b was allocated for CHOGM activities for this financial year in addition to sh37b for completion of State House.

“The Queen’s visit is an opportunity for Uganda to showcase itself,” Kutesa told the committee chaired by Onyango Kakoba (Buikwe west).

He announced that the Commonwealth Secretary General had confirmed that CHOGM will take place in Uganda from Friday November 23-25. The meeting, to attract between 3,000 to 5,000 visitors to Uganda is to cost about sh102b, he said.

The committee had invited the minister to brief them following concerns by MPs as to how Parliament was going to be involved in CHOGM.

Kutesa assured the committee that Uganda was ahead of schedule, given the time left for the meeting. He assured the committee that a number of activities were carried out to ensure security.
