KAMPALA: New observers
Ten leaders from the war-affected areas will be part of the team of observers in the ongoing peace talks between the Government and the LRA rebels. The agreement follows a meeting between President Yoweri Museveni and a team of leaders from northern Uganda who met him on Wednesday to brief him on the ongoing talks in Juba. The team included Betty Amongi, Nobert Mao, Santa Okot, Peter Odok, David Pulkol and a foreign lawyer, Barnely Assako.

KAMPALA: Cops charged
Two Police officers were yesterday charged with abuse of office in connection with the release of a murder suspect. They were remanded in Luzira Prison until September 11 when they will re-appear in court for mention of their case. James Asuba, attached to Aviation Police Post in Entebbe and Jeff Kiwanuka, attached to the Wakiso Police Special Branch headquarters, allegedly released Sgt Richard Mugabi. They denied the charges Buganda Road Court Magistrate Samuel Masaba. Charged before the same court for the same offence was Lt. Bernard Karugaba, who allegedly connived with the two Police officers.

KAMPALA: Opus Dei boss
The head of the Catholic Church’s Opus Dei worldwide, Bishop Javier Echevarria, is coming to Uganda to help the faithful understand better the work of the movement. He is expected to meet Kampala Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga and Lugazi Bishop Dr. Matthias Ssekamanya, on Monday. They will discuss ways of expanding the membership and the work of the movement in Uganda.

KAMPALA: Women slam
Nakawa Division Women Council has criticised the Government’s proposal to scrap women councils. The women said the proposal is meant to deny them a forum to defend their rights. Addressing the women at Naguru Infants School on Saturday, Ruth Muguta, a Kampala City Council senior gender officer, said the easiest way to mobilise and sensitise women was through women councils.
