Recently, it was discovered that Uganda has oil in Lake Albert in Western Uganda. There was a lot of excitement about that new discovery. Countries like Libya, Saudi Arabia Nigeria, Kuwait and Iran that have oil have become rich because of the oil. Elvina Nawaguna asked some children what they think about this discovery

I think it is good for Uganda because Ugandans will not waste their money on importing oil from other countries. It is good for Uganda’s economy because other countries can come and buy the oil from us. But if people in the village use it badly, they can leave it where there are children and if the children drink it they can die.

Police Children’s School

They found oil on lake Albert. It is a good thing because oil is used for our work like driving cars, house cooking and for company raw materials. It will help Uganda to develop by employing more people, but the company might pollute the environment.

Froebel Nursery and Primary School

I think they should begin mining it because the western region and the whole of Uganda will develop. More industries will be built and people will get jobs.
- Duncan Turyareba, 13,
Froebel Nursery and Primary School

It is bad because it can be so hot and if it is too much the pipe can burst and it kills people.

I think it will earn Uganda income when the oil is exported to other countries and refined to make different products like petrol, diesel, kerosene and petroleum jelly. It will create employment for Ugandans when they work in the drilling of the oil. But oil can lead to pollution and exploitation of the environment. There will no longer be crops in the place where the oil will be got.
- Brian Mukeswa, 11,
Buganda Road Primary School

They are just discovering it and it is still crude. If a country like Uganda gets such a chance, we shall be rich like Libya and Nigeria. But the problem is that it will bring back colonialists to Uganda. They take it that Africans don’t have the technology, so they will come and take over the oil.
- Derick Bamuzibire, P7,
Police Children’s School

Uganda is going to earn a lot of income through the oil products like lubricants and petrol. The only problem is that the nearest refiner is far away in Mombasa.
- Augustine Ainembabazi, 11, Buganda Road Primary School

Our teacher told us that they had discovered oil on lake Albert. Oil is used on machines so that they don’t rust or to stop friction. It will affect the fish in the lake and the people who take the water. If they pour the oil in the water, the fish will not get oxygen and will die.

I think we shall sell the oil to other countries and it will help in the attraction of tourists. The Government can call other people to help, but if they don’t guard it very well, people from outside countries can come and steal it.
