PARLIAMENT yesterday confirmed the appointment of nine MPs to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), reports Mary Karugaba and Josephine Maseruka.

The MPs are opposition representatives Wandera Ogalo and Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu, both of FDC, Dora Byamukama, Margaret Zziwa, Nusura Tiperu, Mike Sebalu, Dan Kidega, Stephen Mulengani and Lydia Wanyoto, all from the NRM party.

The Leader of the Opposition, Ogenga Latigo, said opposition parties had conceded to the 7:2 ratio for the sake of “strengthening the performance of multiparty systems.”

“The election of the members had become an issue of contention. We had earlier expressed bitterness that the NRM had taken seven members to EALA yet the opposition has only two. But now we concede and believe that with Mugisha Muntu and Wandera Ogalo on the team, the group is strong enough to strengthen the performance of the multiparty system,” he said to an applause from the members.
