FORMER Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) diehard Cecilia Atim Ogwal has regained her political glory after defeating three women to become the Member of Parliament for the new Dokolo district.

Ogwal bagged 9,162 votes (36%), while NRM candidate Ruth Atala Adupa got 7,208 votes, 28% of the total votes cast. Other candidates were former Lira Woman MP Margaret Ateng, with 5,844 (23%) and Agnes Owiny (Independent) with 3,202 (12.6%). Owiny had lost to Adupa in the NRM primary elections.

Ogwal contested as an independent after she disagreed with UPC party leaders in 2005, headed by Miria Kalule Obote. She lost her Lira Municipality seat to Jimmy Akena Obote, son of former President the late Dr. Apollo Milton Obote.

Meanwhile, John Okello Okello, an independent candidate, defeated Ogwang Alele of UPC for the Dokolo LC5 chairmanship in the same election. Okello Okello has been moving closely with Ogwal during the campaign period.

In Oyam, former Apac Woman MP and a strong NRM supporter, Beatrice Amongi Lagada, trounced three new politicians with 16,969 votes (45.5%), followed by Alum Santa Ogwang, with 13,134 (35.5%), Florence Okello Otto 4,202 (11.4%) and Florence bongoyinge Aguti 2,652 (7.2%).

Charles Okello Engola of NRM beat Independent Tommy Obong Ojok to become the first chairman of Oyam district.

Lira district Police commander Ivan Nkwasibwe, overseeing the security during the elections, said on Monday that the Police rounded up 24 campaign agents of Ogwal, suspected of planning to disorganise the elections. He said they had released them on Police bond.
