A total of 156 primary school teachers in Bugiri district have been laid off after they were found to have joined the profession illegitimately.

District education officer Mohammed Masingano said some teachers used borrowed transcripts, while others forged their documents.

In an interview in his office recently, Masingano said they were in the process of cancelling the names of culprits from the payroll.

“We have formally communicated to the ministry to that effect to ensure that the names of the culprits are deleted from the list of teachers in the district,” said Masingano.

He said his office last month embarked on a teacher head-count and scrutinised their particulars. Masingano said the teachers might be arrested and charged with forgery and impersonation.
