THE prestigious overall winner’s Blue Jacket may be a far cry for scratch player Stephen ‘Tiger Woods’ Birungi in this weekend’s uganda telecom Golf Open but not the gross prize.
The overall and group winners of the 36 hole-tournament will be determined by a net score, but there is also a gross prize at stake to cater for low handicap players.
“I have already started training hard for the gross prize and I hope to take it. I know all the national team players are vying for the same but I will do my best to beat them. I want to play below the course par because I will also be gauging myself for the Uganda Open that is around the corner,” Birungi said after a practice session at the Kitante course.
Shaban Lwanga, Herman Mutaawe and Brian Mwesigwa among others, will face off with Birungi for the top prize.
The tournament also has a professionals’ category that will play 54 holes starting today.
The professionals will battle for sh3m in cash prizes in the sixth edition of the utl golf event at the par-72 Kitante course.
“The money at stake is more than we have been competing for in the other tournaments so we have to work for it. We will play for three days which I think will be tough,” Uganda Professional Golfers Association (UPGA) captain Deo Akope commented.
