OVER 20,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) were on Saturday night left homeless after a storm blew off the roofs of over 300 huts in Pabbo sub-county, Amuru district.

The area LC3 chairman, Christopher Ojera, said most of the huts had their roofs covered with tarpaulins donated by humanitarian organisations after fire destroyed thousands of grass-thatched huts in the camp last year.

Food and other household items were soaked. Ojera appealed for immediate assistance in form of food, shelter, clothing and blankets for the affected people.

“This morning very many children were taken to the two health units in the camp with fever after spending the whole night in the cold,” Ojera said.

He said the tarpaulins distributed in July last year, were torn and needed replacement. They were expected to serve for six months, he said.

He said the population in Pabbo camp had again increased following a fresh influx of IDPs from Masindi and Adjumani districts. The camp is the largest in northern Uganda.
