SIR — I write in support of degazetting part of Mabira forest for sugarcane growing. Whether this is done for scoul or any other investor is not my concern.

we should be ashamed to support Stone Age trade of honey, herbs and wood fuel collection from natural forests, which is done by people in the vicinity of Mabira as petty business.

This should not stop an elected president whose party manifesto includes creating prosperity for all from degazetting part of the forest for sugarcane growing thereby giving more jobs to Ugandans. After all, he approached it rationally because it is only part of the vast, but over-depleted Mabira which is proposed to be degazetted for sugarcane growing. It is common knowledge that development and transformation of a country’s economy cannot be done without advantages and disadvantages in the process of wealth creation. For example building a dam in china displaced millions of people but it had to be done for the common good.

The president has not allocated Mabira to himself or to the Metha family to take to India. The part which is to be degazetted will be used to grow sugarcane, process it, and sell it in Uganda.

Over 3000 jobs that will be created in the small-degazetted part of Mabira will be up for grabs in Uganda.
