HANDICAP-15 golfer Paul Kagwa was the hero of the Dan Nkata memorial tournament at the weekend.
Kagwa carded 39 stable ford points to win the inaugural event at the 18-hole Entebbe Club course.
The overall winner also led Entebbe golfers to a commanding finish. The ladies top award went to handicap 11 player Alice Owori of Kampala.
The event that attracted 86 golfers, was held in memory of Dan Nkata, a former club captain and a key figure in re-designing East Africa’s oldest course, inaugurated in 1903.
Nkata and his son Ian also designed several other courses, including the nearby Garuga Country Club. The late designer’s efforts saw the 9-hole Entebbe course become an 18-hole facility in 2003.
Nkata, whose association with the lake-shore course stretched to over 40 years, was also in the group of the first Ugandans to play golf.
Nkata’s widow Victoria, the first indigenous East African lady golfer, and members of the family organised the tournament and an exhibition of memorabilia in conjunction with Entebbe Club.
Victoria and her son David Sseppuuya, who is also Editor-in-Chief of The New Vision, presided over the prize presentation.
The Nkata family donated a rotating trophy to be used for future tournaments. The family also donated 45 clubs and 50 magazines and instructional materials from Nkata’s collection to be used by talented but needy youngsters to advance their careers.
At the same time, Entebbe Club captain, Dr Chris Rutebarika, presented a trophy to the Nkata family in recognition of the deceased’s contribution to golf. The club also named the 18th tee after Nkata, who passed way in 2004 aged 73.
