SIR — The elderly people are demanding representation in parliament. Their concern is very legitimate and well articulated. However, I don’t think their presence in parliament would significantly change their plight. We have many interest groups in parliament but whether they have effectively represented their constituents is very questionable. We have women’s MPs, Workers MPs and Youth Mps and the MP who represents the constituency. This was a very good idea when gender representation was a big issue. This raises the question of national interest against selfish gain among our MPs. Every MP should be able to articulate the pertinent issues affecting the youth, women, disabled elderly and so forth. Policies passed by parliament should be able to cater for every Ugandan. If we are to go by interest group representation we shall have a problem. Our parliament is already bursting at the seams.
