RWANDAN Emmanuel Ruterana maintained his early lead to win the Independence golf Open here on Sunday. Ruterana, who shocked an array of local stars, first fired warning shots with an opening round one under par-67.

He went on to seal victory with a closing round 69 for an aggregate of 136, beating homeboy George Olayo by two strokes.

Olayo however, bagged the maximum eight Uganda Golf Union (UGU) stroke-play championship points because the Rwandan is ineligible to score championship points.

“I wanted to win and tried hard but it wasn’t my day. But what is important is I have closed in on Birungi (Stephen) in the UGU title,” Olayo commented.

Olayo, who took his tally to 43 points, lies just 2.5 points behind leader “Tiger Woods” Birungi who only managed to pick a point after sharing seventh position with Peter Ssendawula, Shaban Lwanga and Brian Tolit.

In the professional category Stephen Kasaija recovered from six-strokes deficit to finish square with Kenyan David Odhiambo and share sh1.4m in the event sponsored by Hot Loaf, Pepsi, Orient Bank and Celtel.

Deo Akope, Godfrey Mande, Dennis Anguyo, Norah Mbabazi and Sadi Atibu shared the rest of the money. Sh3m was given out.

Kabale teenager Robert Ahalimpise (h/c 18), 17, was the lucky winner of two tickets to Dubai after winning the men’s nett category. Emilly Asiimwe won two tickets to Dubai while Flavia Namakula and Jim Bitwire won a weekend at Kampala Serena Hotel.
