2 jailed over Umeme wires

POWER distributor, Umeme Ltd has received a conviction for its first victims in its efforts to curb down on electricity wire thefts.

Robert Kisubi, the corporate communitions manager, said in a statement recently that Ismail Nsereko and Isma Ssempa, were sentenced to five years imprisonment each and their properties worth sh27m attached.

“Two people were convicted to five years in jail each for causing damage to a supply line and interfering with electrical installation,” he said.

“In addition, the chief magistrate ordered that property belonging to the two worth sh27m be attached and auctioned to compensate Umeme,” the statement said.

Kisubi said the judgment was delivered by Iganga chief magistrate court in pusuit of section 91 of the 1999 Electricity Act.

He said Umeme had spent about $2m (sh3.7b) in the last 18 months to repair vandalised installation such as power cables and transformers.

Edward Twine, the public relation officer, said most interruptions in power supply were as a result of vandalism.

He appealed to clients to ensure that they complied with standards of the amount of electricity supplied to them and avoid illegal use of power.

Twine advised citizens to be vigilant on wire thieves any cases of electrical vandalism to Police and nearby Umeme offices.
