DISPLACED Karimojong are to be resettled outside Karamoja, minister Syda Bbumba has said.
The gender, labour and social development minister said the Government was investigating the possibility of finding land outside Karamoja to resettle some Karimojong.
Bbumba said on Thursday that many Karimojong were being forced out of their homes because of insecurity and harsh living conditions.
She was launching a research report entitled ‘A Chronic emergency: Child protection among communities in Karamoja region.’
The research was done by Dr Kato Nkima and published by Save the Children in Uganda. The function took place at Grand Imperial Hotel, Kampala.
“People always ask me, why not round up children in Kampala and other towns and take them back to Karamoja? I tell them Uganda belongs to all Ugandans. We need to look at the factors pushing children and women out of Karamoja. If we address them then they will not move,” she said.
Bbumba said it was pitiful to see Karimojong begging on the streets and being pushed around as if they were not human beings.
She said failure to report child abuse to the formal justice system had enabled culprits to escape justice.
The report said there was a chronic emergency in Karamoja caused by cyclical drought, food insecurity and cattle raids.
