FORMER East African Community secretary general Amanya Mushega and former energy minister Richard Kaijuka have disagreed with Bushenyi district MPs over the split of the district.

While Mushega, Kaijuka, the state health minister Richard Nduhura and disaster preparedness minister Prof. Tarsis Kabwegyere are against the creation of new districts out of Bushenyi, some MPs want the district to be split.

Mushega’s group claims Bushenyi would be in position to negotiate better once the district remains intact.

However, Sheema North’s Elioda Tumwesigye (right), Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu (Sheema South), Gaude Tindamanyire (Bunyaruguru) and Deus Bikwasizehi (Buhweju) claim the district has to be divided to benefit from the decentralisation programme.

This was during a meeting that was organised by the district NRM chairman, Kahinda Otafiire, at his home in Kampala.

According to a source that attended the meeting, Otafiire had invited opinion leaders and MPs from the district to discuss whether the district should be split.

“They talked of bargaining power, but they did not justify it,” the source said.

The source said Otafiire and the district Woman, MP Mary Karooro, have neither supported nor rejected the idea of dividing the district.
