THE MTN Kampala International Marathon has already attracted 1000 runners a week before the closure of registration.

In a weekly press briefing for the event at the MTN Towers, the company’s PRO Tina Byaruhanga said 100 have registered for the 42.198km marathon while the rest will compete in the 10km and wheelchair races.

“We are still waiting for more entries from Ethiopia and Djibouti. We also expect more companies to enter the race as we contribute towards the Mama Bag project,” said Byaruhanga.

All the money raised will go into the Red Cross Mama Bag project to help expectant mothers in northern Uganda.

The latest team to enter the 10km race on November 19 is Sheraton Kampala. Their team will be led by Kwashie Gbedemah and Joseph Walakira.

Stanbic Bank, Nile Breweries, Allied Bank, Motorcare, Quality Chemicals , Citibank and the British High Commission had earlier entered teams in the 10km corporate challenge. MTN has entered four teams.

The marathon will also act as one of the qualifiers for the World Athletics Championship due in Osaka in 2007. The competition has attracted 15 Kenyans, four Rwandans and three Tanzanians.

Francis Yiga (men) and Jane Suuto (women) will lead Uganda’s challenge in the marathon while Dorcus Inzikuru will be the star attraction in the women’s 10km race.

The event is facilitated by Rwenzori Beverages, Saracen, Red Cross, The New Vision, DHL, True African, SMS Media and Uhuru Restaurant.
