Wild cheers welcomed singer Bobi Wine’s win of the PAM 2006 artiste of the year award at Lugogo on Saturday.

Wild cheers welcomed singer Bobi Wine’s win of the PAM 2006 artiste of the year award at Lugogo on Saturday.
The accolade comes with a sh10m cash prize. Bobi Wine beat Mesach Semakula, last year’s winner, Jose Chameleone and Bebe Cool to the award. Nominated a record seven times, Bobi Wine also took home the Best Afrobeat Single award for his song, Owana W’abandi (Bada).
He received the award from Dr. William Kalema, the chairman board of directors, MultiChoice Uganda. Bobi wine, clad in a snow-white suit with a matching cap was flanked by girlfriend Barbara Itungo and Semakula.
He told the guests, “I feel I don’t deserve this. But If that is your decision, so be it.”
Snuggling close to his girlfriend, Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, said, “I have not won this award because others can’t. I believe this is my year and this award could not have come at a better time.”
Among the notable winners of the night were Semakula and Iryn Namubiru who won Best Male and Female artistes of the year respectively. The two awards carry a cash prize of sh3.5m each. The Song of the Year went to the East African Bashment Crew for their single Fire Anthem.
The group has Bebe Cool and Kenya’s musical duo Necessary Noize.
Jose Chameleone won Best Afrobeat artiste, Judith Babirye (best gospel single for Beera Nange), Father Anthony Musaala (best Gospel artiste/group), Matthias Walukaga (best Kadongo Kamu single), Peter Miles (best ragga artiste/group), Ronald Mayinja (best live band single for Tulikubunkenke).
DJ Languna was named northern artiste of the year, Lady Mariam (Western artiste of the year), Mark P (eastern artiste of the year), Phina Mugerwa (best new artiste), Sylver Kyagulanyi (song writer of the year) and the Lifetime achievement award went to George Kakoma, the Uganda national anthem composer.
This year the awards recognised artistes from Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda. Three artistes from each country were awarded prizes in the Best Male, Best Female and Best Band/Group categories.
A total of 37 awards were given out. A sh1m cash prize is given to all Ugandan winners in all the categories with the exception of Artiste of The Year, Best Female and Best Male Artiste. Winners from Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania won $500 each.
PAM chairman Isaac Mulindwa said a panel of judges and the general public cast votes for a single winner in each category.
The judges’ vote constituted 60% of the total vote per category, while the public’s vote constituted 40%.
The Nnabegereka of Buganda, Sylvia Nagginda, attended the prestigious event. Price Junjju and Uganda Investment Authority chief Maggie Kigozi also attended and presented awards. Celtel Uganda and Bell Lager sponsored the awards.
