THE UPDF owes Mulago Hospital sh20m.
The money was for cardiac treatment for army officers.
A source at the hospital said the hospital cardiac unit handles an average of five UPDF officers daily.
“We normally send them (UPDF) bills every three months and at the time we wrote to them, we had written bills four times without payment,” the source said on Wednesday.
In an August 21 letter, the Uganda Heart Institute deputy director, Dr. John Omagino, wrote to the UPDF chief of medical services, Dr. James Makumbi, demanding payment.
“We have been providing medical services in terms of specialised cardiac treatment to the staff of UPDF but to-date, no payment has been made despite sending numerous reminders,” the letter read.
The source said the letter addressed inability to pay for a long time yet the bills were relatively small. “The bills would be sh5m or less per month,” the source added.
The source said they first demanded payment on May 30, 2005 when a bill of sh1,688,500 was sent to the UPDF.
The hospital sent another bill of sh6,084,750 on September 30, 2005 and another of sh1,311,500 on November 17.
This year the hospital has written three bills; of sh5,275,800 on February 27, of sh2,269,200 on June 6, and one of sh4,210,300 on July 20.
The bills had accumulated to sh20,840,050 when the letter was written.
