DHL will for the third year running fly in electronic timing chips for the November 19 MTN Kampala International Marathon. The gadgets will enhance the event’s international status.

The courier company has secured the chips from ChampionChip South Africa, an internationally recognised body that provides timing gadgets for road races in Africa.

“Thank God, they have helped us for that long. It is very expensive to fly in these chips and then fly them out. We started with them and they are not ready to let us down,” said MTN public relations officer Tina Byaruhanga yesterday.

The chips will replace the manual timers which are cumbersome for such a large entry. The chip is given out with the uniform and it is activated when an athlete crosses the starting line and deactivated when he/she completes the race. The duration it stays activated is the time run over the distance.

Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) publicist Namayo Mawerere last week promised to ensure the chips are not interchanged like last time, when some female runners gave the chips to men so that they post better times.

Rwenzori Beverages, SMS media, Uhuru Restaurant, The New Vision, Saracen, True African and Red Cross also facilitate the Sh400m MTN sponsored event.
