LEADING local athletes are in Bukwo training as they target the MTN Kampala International Marathon prize money.

The top performers in the third edition of the IAAF sanctioned event and its subsidiary races will share sh39.8m. The event is due November 19

“They are at the newly built Arua Athletics camp for high altitude training. The kampala event is becoming more competitive and they do not want to take chances,” said Uganda Athletics Federation publicist Namayo Mawerere.

The winners of both the men and women marathon will take home sh5m each. There are also prizes for the top six finishers in the 10km races in individual, wheelchair, the Masters (aged over 40 years) and corporate categories.

Among those training is Francis Yiga and Siraj Koech, targeting the 42.5km event title.

Meanwhile, MTN has kicked off a campaign top teach the communities the advantages of the marathon.

“Our target is to involve everyone. We are building a marathon that is internationally recognised and we can not avoid doing it with the community. 3300 runners is not a small number,” explained MTN Public relations officer Tina Byaruhanga.
