THE Government has appealed to the UN to pressure LRA rebels into releasing non-combatants.
Internal affairs minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda yesterday told journalists at the Media Centre in Kampala that they met UN Under Secretary for humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland and discussed the matter.
Rugunda, the chief government negotiator at the Juba peace talks said, “We had a fruitful meeting with Jan Egeland and his team. we asked him to use his office to press for the release of children and women and he promised to raise it when he meets the LRA top leadership. But Egeland failed to secure this.
“We invited the UN to support demobilisation and rehabilitation and devise measurers to enhance the peace process, to ensure it is expedited and achieves desired results,” he said.
On Kony’s demands for the withdrawal of his indictment by ICC, Rugunda said the ICC has its mandate and that Uganda being a signatory, must support it.
