MPs’ outburst regrettable!

SIR — I read with indignation a story in your paper on Friday titled “Otto warns investors” in which the MP of Aruu, Mr Odonga Otto, threatened to “spear to death any investor who dares to step in his constituency”.

SIR — I read with indignation a story in your paper on Friday titled “Otto warns investors” in which the MP of Aruu, Mr Odonga Otto, threatened to “spear to death any investor who dares to step in his constituency”.

Politicking aside, I expect the political, cultural and religious leadership in Acholi to denounce such irresponsible utterances which attempt to depict the people in the area as backward and anti-development.

While the whole country is yearning for investors to turn our natural resources into food, energy, income, wealth, and employment, Otto is busy threatening to “kill anyone who dares to plough Acholi land”.

My sincere hope is that the people Otto represents do not agree with him on this.
Otherwise, we have a problem on our hands, which calls for a massive campaign to educate our brothers and sisters on the importance of investment.

SIR — The recent outbursts by Okello Okello and Odonga Otto regarding land and investors in the northern region is uncalled for. There are legally prescribed ways to acquire land not only by investors but anyone who so desires in any part of the country.

The era of sorting out land issues with spears and arrows is out of the question in the second millennium. As MPs, Okello Okello and Otto should be above this kind of thinking because they are better placed to follow appropriate channels on national issues without resorting to anarchy.

How about the many investors with good intentions from northern Uganda who have heavily invested in other areas of Uganda?

What message are these MPs sending to the rest of Ugandans? We need to be patriotic Ugandans rather than inward looking petty village chiefs.
Uganda is bigger than than our personal selfish intentions.
