WAKISO Woman MP, Rosemary Senninde has urged parents and school headteachers to encourage children to plant trees so as to conserve the environment.

“There is an urgent need to restore the spirit of tree planting in the community so as to conserve the environment,” Senninde said Friday while launching Plant A Tree for Kids project at Gayaza Bright Future primary school in Wakiso district.

She said the habit of planting trees especially fruits trees had died with the older generation due to the changing life style but could be revived among children in primary schools.

The project, a brain child of Bukedde news editor James Walugembe and his wife Allen, aims at planting 600 fruit trees annually so as to provide fruits to the community as well as conserve the environment.

“Our target is to instill a culture of tree planting in the community starting with children because they constitute the future generation. We want to plant 50 trees per month,” Walugembe said.

He said the family saves its resources to buy avocado, jackfruit and guava seedlings among other fruits at sh500 each.

The area chairman, Paul Nsobya, who also participated in the tree-planting exercise, said he would sell the idea to schools in his area of jurisdiction as well as the residents.

The school headmaster, Eddy Kigozi, said they would encourage tree-planting in the community through reminding pupils regularly. The school provided 15 seedlings.
