RIYAZ Kurji’s bid to win his maiden Kenya National Rally Championship title was nipped in the bud Sunday when he crashed out of the KCB Guru Nanak rally in Machakos, Kenya.
Kurji, who needed to win the last event of the series in Nakuru to carry the title went out in CS3 - Lukenya after damaging the drive-shaft of his Subaru Impreza.
“It is too bad that my bid to win the title has ended. My misfortune started on Saturday when I hit a rut to trail seven other cars,†Kurji said after crashing out.
Ian Duncan navigated by Amar Slatch in a Toyota Hilux Turbo made history as the first driver to win a single round for the unprecedented 10th time.
Duncan beat reigning champion Azar Anwar by 51 seconds after snatching the lead from him in the penultimate stage.
Anwar recaptured the KNRC lead with 340 points.
This year’s Guru Nanak was a real menace with muddy conditions.
Overnight leader Lee Rose extended his lead into the Lukenya stage but retired with a fuel pump failure.
