THE motor vehicle validation exercise to ascertain the number of vehicles in the country kicked off in Kampala yesterday.

The exercise conducted by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) and the Police ends on November 30 in Kampala before spreading out to other parts of the country.

The operation, which started at 7:00am across the city, received a low turn-up that the Police attributed to the early morning downpour.

Kampala Extra Region Traffic chief Sarah Kibwika, who is supervising the exercise, said, “All motorists should know that the validation exercise is voluntary. No body will be arrested neither will his/her vehicle be impounded if they report for checking at the various points.”

She, however, warned that after the exercise, the Police would crack down on motorists without clearance stickers.

At the assemble points that The New Vision visited, only 54 vehicles had reported for the exercise and 38 had been issued with clearance stickers by midday.

The points are Clock Tower, Kololo Airstrip, Old Kampala Secondary Play ground, and Kiira Road Police ground.

Contrary to earlier URA reports that all motorists were required to move with their Logbooks, Kibwika said, “Motorists don't need move with their original log books. Photocopies can do. They should also carry along with them the road license as well as the motor vehicle transfer forms.”

She identified other assemble points as Namboole car parking, Dott services playground at Kawempe and all the seven police divisions of Jinja Road, Kiira Road, Katwe, Old Kampala, Kampala Central Police Station, Wandegeya and Kawempe. The URA commissioner, Allen Kagina, said the validation exercise would help the revenue body to establish and confirm the rightful owners of vehicles.

“We also want to verify the validity of the road licences and accord an opportunity to those with forged ones to correct the problem,” she said.

The exercise will last for 10 days in Kampala.

It starts at 7:00am and ends at 7:00pm daily.
