BONIFACE Kiprop looks set to scoop the Athlete of the Year award for the second time in three years.

The third edition of the MTN-sponsored annual Athlete of the Year dinner, which closes the athletics season, is due today at Grand Imperial Hotel.

The Commonwealth 10000m gold medallist, who has twice improved on the national record of 5000m during the season, will however have to shrug off stiff competition from other top athletes, among them Wilson Busienei.

Busienei has had a good season. He was the best performing Ugandan at both the short and long races at this year’s World Cross Country championship in Japan. He ended his season by winning the national Road Running championship and finishing fourth at the World Running championship in Dabracen, a feat that no other Ugandan has ever achieved.

Moses Kipsiro, gold medallist in the Africa Championships is also a contender for the title, whose winner will be announced at today’s function.

The event will also see the crowning of Uganda’s most upcoming talent and also the best male and female athletes of the year.

Dorcus Inzikuru is well placed for the female award. Despite health problems, she has performed well in local and international events. Her awards include a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in March.
