High Court Judge Ezekiel Muhanguzi has sentenced a 28-year-old man who pleaded guilty to defiling a six-year-old girl to life imprisonment.

Abbey Tugume of ntenjeru in Mukono district looked shocked after the sentence was read to him at the court sitting in Mukono.
Prosecution told court that Tugume defiled the girl on May 6 in his garden.

He then cautioned the girl against reporting it.

Court heard that the victim narrated her fate to her parents as soon as she went back home from the garden.

The parents reported the matter to Police, who later arrested Tugume.
In his ruling, Muhanguzi said Tugume deserved a tougher punishment, because he had acted like a beast.

The judge also sentenced 17 other men to various terms in jail, over cases of defilement and manslaughter. The sentences ranged from hours to 12 months.

Godfrey Candia, 20 and Sadic Mayanja were among convicts sentenced to an hour in jail.
They were imprisoned up the end of the court session that expired shortly after.

The men looked relieved and bowed their heads for a minute to praise God.

Muhanguzi said convicts who received brief jail terms were first offenders who had pleaded guilty and had not wasted court’s time.
Besides, the victims they defiled had babies who needed fatherly attention.

Some of the convicts included Sunday Ndayimana, 28, who defiled a 14-year-old girl and James Isanga, 40, who defiled a 12-year-old girl.
