UGANDA bowed out of the Africa Taekowndo championship to Lesotho on Thursday evening with heads high after brilliant display of skills. However they blamed their early exit to ill-preparation and lack of government support.

Uganda’s head of delegation Hakeem Nsubuga said they were tired of being ashamed all the time and blamed their exit on tribulations the team faced ahead of their match against the South African nation.

“We came without any funding. We spent the first night in the cold without meals until a good Kenyan samaritan — Muleu George — came to our rescue and offered us accommodation at his gym,” he said.

Nsubuga said they also faced a myriad of problems in their training schedules with no money. He said only the UTA chairman and some Ugandans in the United States offered some assistance.

Moses Mukesi was the star attraction when he lost to All Africa Games champion Leka Nyane Khothatso by a solitary point in the finweight contest.

Mark Ogwang also put up a brave show before losing to Tsupane Thabpo by a point in extra time, while Andrea Mugisha lost to Ntihlele Thakamphaki in a 0-3 whitewash in the 5-aside contest. Consequently, Umar Adam and Paul Mbogo did not fight after losing three opening fights.

Team coach Peter Kamau said the team put a brilliant show, adding that they would now embark on the team’s preparation for the All African Games in Algiers next July.
