A Hungarian film production was recently in Uganda to capture the country’s beauty through still pictures and shot a 26-minute footage of prominent tourist spots to be shown and promoted for non-profit on three major television channels in Hungary and across Europe in English, German, French and Hungarian languages.

The brainchild was EDSA African Safaris and Tours owned by a Ugandan couple based in Hungary in partnership with Hungarian film specialists and supported by Gordon Wavamunno, the Honourary Consul through the Consulate of Hungary.

The initiative is intended to market Uganda as a tourism destination. Sites filmed include Lake Victoria, Bujagali, Murchison Falls, Mountains of the Moon, national parks, Namugongo Shrine and Kasubi Tombs.

Over a luncheon at Le Chateau, Sarah Mugabi, the EDSA proprietor, said many Hungarians were ignorant about Uganda’s vibrant and popular holiday destinations. “Our mission is to break into the new and emerging markets of the wider European Union, Far East and the Russian Federation,” Mugabi said.

Wavamunno said the idea would boost Uganda’s tourism and that besides tourism Uganda too could export products like flowers to Hungary.

Andrew Kasirye, chairman Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), encouraged the partnership, saying it was a unique way to market Uganda and that UWA would seek to reciprocate the gesture.
