THE Vice President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya has urged districts to start small-scale micro-finance schemes where locals can borrow money to buy solar gadgets and install electricity in their houses.
He said beneficiaries could then pay back in installments.

Bukenya said the Government was keen on phasing out tadooba (wick lamps) because they were a health hazard.
“The soot from tadooba and burnt tyres contains carbonmonoxide that when inhaled, mixes and stays permanently in blood.

“This affects the human lungs, leading to cancer,” Bukenya said.

The VP said the soot weakens a person, causing a reduction in productivity.
He said the soot had the same effect on poultry and animals.

Bukenya urged students to stop using tadooba for reading.

“Parents should save money and install electricity in their houses. The Government is also keen on modest houses,” he said.
