WANDEGEYA - The business community has lost millions of shillings due to low sales. This follows the closure of Makerere University on November 12. Michael Kabogueza, a marketing manager with Michael’s Boutique, said business has not been well since the university closed. He said the business community in the area depended on the students. “We pay for rent and transport without making profits,” Kabogueza said. A worker with Jab Tech, dealers in mobile airtime and phones, said before the university closed, they used to make a daily turnover of sh200,000.
“We also deal in stationary and photocopying but we have no clients,” he said.

Firms advised on governance

KAMPALA - Companies should practice good corporate governance, Vincent Kaheeru, the Institute of Corporate Governance of Uganda (ICGU) CEO said recently. During a corporate governance training organised by ICGU at Hotel Africana, Kaheeru said corporate governance has a central role in sustainable wealth creation in private sector development. “It is a fundamental building block in growth of a thriving business community. Uganda’s corruption world-ranking has affected the reputation of business,” he said.

Food prices up in Kayunga

KAYUNGA - Food prices have shot up following the collapse of three main bridges in the district. A batch of matooke that previously sold at sh5,000, now goes for sh20,000. Cassava has risen from sh500 a heap to ah1,500 while a heap of sweet potatoes moved to sh1,000 from sh500. The collapse of the bridges has cut off the supply areas from the urban centre.

Rukungiri gets modern market

RUKUNGIRI - The Government through the Agricultural Modernisation Programme has constructed modern markets and produce stores worth sh220m. The Bikurungu Market was commissioned on Wednesday by the social service secretary Emmy Ngabirano. Ngabirano who represented district chairperson Zedekia Karokora, lauded the Government for the project.
