THE state minister for economic monitoring, Maurice Kagimu, has halted the relocation of kiosks from Arua Municipality.

He said the Government would relocate the kiosks to a new site which would be ready in six months.

Kagimu directed that kiosks, which had been impounded, should not be returned to the city centre.
He was meeting kiosk owners and the municipal council authorities at the Catholic Centre in Arua town on Thursday.

The minister’s directive follows the council’s operation to rid the city of kiosks. About 85 kiosks in the city centre were impounded by the council.

Mayor Charles Asiki said the operation was aimed at establishing order in the town.

He said some people had politicised the exercise.

The resolution received backing from the district security committee which said kiosks were a security threat, saying they habour criminals, illegal guns, and prison escapees.

Kiosk owners urged the Government to expedite its programme, saying they need to resume work and raise money to repay loans they got from banks.
