Floods have cut off three roads in Kaliro district. The roads are Kaliro-Bulumba- Nawaikoke road, Kamuli-Namwendwa-Bulumba-Kaliro road and Bulumba-Gadumire-Nawaikoke road.

They are managed by the Central Government.

Business on the three main routes has been paralysed as traders and travellers have to hire canoes to cross from one side to another.
Fares from Kamuli to Kaliro have tripled from sh2,000 to sh6,000 as taxis and buses have sought a distant but safe route.

“Taxi and bus drivers from Kamuli are travelling to Jinja using the Jinja-Kamuli highway, then proceed to Iganga and connect to Kaliro,” Robert Bamujje, a taxi guide at Kaliro-Kamuli stage, said.

The chief administrative officer, Godfrey Kaima, said some sections of the affected roads cross over Lumbuye stream, which connects River Nile to Lake Kyoga.

“Heavy rains have caused the stream to flood, that sections of the road crossing over it have been submerged,“ Kaima said.
He said huge culverts have to be fixed at the affected section of the roads, before they could be opened.

The Department of Meteorology predicted that the current El Nino rains would continue up to January. The excessive rains have led to flooding in Kampala, Butaleja, Tororo, Kotido, Adjumani, Dokolo and Kitgum districts among others. El Nino has also triggered landslides in highland areas like Mbale.
