THE Baruuli are free to pay allegiance to the Ssabaruuli or the Kabaka of Buganda, reports Frederick Kiwanuka.

“We shall not force anyone to owe loyalty to the Ssabaruuli, because cultural matters are voluntary,” the premier of Buruuli, Sammy Senkumba, said on Monday.

The Baruuli are now free to sing ekitiibwa kya Buganda (Buganda’s anthem) if they preferred, Senkumba clarified.

He was reacting to a recent incident when residents of Nakasongola town council sang Buganda’s anthem during a victory party organised by area MP Peter Nyombi.

The cultural head of the Baruuli-Banyara clans, Ssabaruuli Mwogezi Butamanya, had banned the singing of Ekitiibwa kya Buganda at public functions.

Mwogezi instituted a new anthem for Buruuli, which is to replace ekitiibwa kya Buganda.

“It (Buruuli anthem) is what we expect to be sang, but if one prefers to sing ekitiibwa kya Buganda, we cannot force him to do otherwise,” the Katikkiro explained.

He said they would hold the second coronation anniversary for the Ssabaruuli who was installed in 2004.
