STEPHEN Birungi and rival George Olayo will wait a little longer to get their hands on the national golf crown.

The top contenders for domestic game’s top prize are waiting after postponement of the Kinyara Open due to have been held this weekend.

Kinyara club captain Tile Ayaa, said a new date for the Uganda Golf Union (UGU) event will be fixed soon. “We are not ready, we hope to hold the event before the year ends,” Ayaa explained.
The event, sponsored by Kinyara Sugar Works, was put off for the first time last month.

The UGU calendar also has events in Jinja and Arua this month. But there are strong indications these two events will not be held.

The Kinyara Open will determine the new champion to take over from Stephen Kasaija who later joined the professional ranks.

This year’s race has been a two-horse battle between a three-time winner Kampala’s Birungi and Kabale-based Olayo, who is gunning for a maiden national title.
The two men are looking at starting a professional career next year.
