The Police in Mityana have arrested a gombolola (sub-county) Internal security Officer (GISO) and five other people in connection with the theft of railway sleepers and destruction of a railway line.

The district Police chief, Ibin Idi Senkumbi, said Chrestom Lukwago, the GISO of Malangala, was arrested on Monday at Kikonge together with the Kawolongojjo station master Simon Gimuna.

Others were Lukwago’s sons Ibra Kiggundu and Lawrence Ssentongo, Benson Bugoloobi and Ambrose Kabenge.

They were arrested during an operation led by district CID officer Angel Okello.

By the time of their arrest, Mityana resident district commissioner (RDC) Margaret Kivumbi had warned security officials against involving themselves in the theft of railway sleepers.

She said she had contacted the Violent Crime Crack Unit over the theft because district security officers were not helping her to combat the crime.

However, Senkumbi and Okello dismissed the RDC’s claims. They were addressing journalists on Tuesday.

“Our returns countrywide are the best. In the past four months, we have impounded six vehicles and arrested 20 people who were taken to court. The struggle continues. That is why we have even held the GISO to help us with our investigations,” Senkumbi said.

Okello vowed to track more suspects involved in the theft of the sleepers.

“These could be selling to others. So we have to find out to whom they sell and where the sleepers are taken by those who buy them,” she said.

Last Sunday, a FUSO truck carrying the sleepers was impounded at Kakindu and taken to security offices in Kireka, Kampala.
