KAMPALA - Upper secondary school students have an opportunity to develop their skills this holiday. From January 9 to 29, the Fagil Mandy Education Consultancy has drawn up a programme that includes activities like dance and drama, property care and management, public speaking, personal security, leisure sports, art and crafts. The training will take place at Kitante Primary School. Registration is on at the head offices in Nsooba, Kyebando.

Briton aids Kumi children

KUMI - A British health worker has pledged to support education of disadvantaged children. Susan Hilary said this recently while commissioning Hilary Storm Nursery and Primary School in Kumi district. The school was named after her in recognition of her support in aiding disadvantaged families. Hilary also provides basic needs to the disadvantaged families in Sironko, Pallisa and Mbale.

Teach students decent dances

WAKISO - Students should be taught to dance decently, Canon Godfrey Njagala from Namirembe Diocese has said. He said some cultural dances are immoral and corrupt students’ minds. Njagala, the chairman of Namirembe Diocese Christian Association, was guest of honour at the close of year concert for Kireka Parents Day and Boarding Primary School. The school that started in 1994, has over 400 pupils.

New district education boss

RUKUNGIRI - The District Service Commission has appointed a new Director of Education Service to replace Zaburoni Bakeiha, whose contract expired in November. John Tereraho beat five other candidates in an interview for the job. He has been working as a senior inspector of schools in Kisoro District. Rukungiri Senior Inspector of schools Patrick Byamugisha described him as a hardworking and energetic man, who will boost education in the district.

School plants 2,000 fruit trees

KAYUNGA - St Mary’s Child Empowerment Primary School has been commended for planting over 2,000 avocado, mango and orange trees in Kangulumira, Nazigo and Kayunga sub-counties. During the school’s Speech Day recently, Ntenjeru South MP Tom Kazibwe hailed the school for its efforts in preserving the environment. He urged education institutions to design programmes that will enable students acquire different skills to handle the world’s challenges. Kazibwe donated 20 pieces of iron sheets to boost the construction of a computer laboratory.

Gulu students to visit UK

GULU - Lancashire Gulu Local Agenda 21 Link, with funding from the British Council, has organised exchange visits for teachers, students and pupils in nine schools in Gulu municipality with their counterparts in Lancashire in Britain. The Agenda vice-chairperson Frances Maguire recently said the three-year exchange programme would begin in May next year.

Students for Parliament

SOROTI - Kaberamaido County MP Julius Emigu has promised to take 12 Senior Five students of Soroti Community S.S to attend Parliamentary sessions. School director Simon Opeded recently said the students who excelled in academics and politics would travel to Kampala for four days before the beginning of First Term.

Parents advised on discipline

KUMI - Parents have been advised to instil discipline and good morals in their children. “Discipline is one of the determinants for better performance in school,” said Catherine Tukei, the director of Hope Pre-Primary and Nursery School. Opening the school’s annual general meeting recently, Tukei also announced that the school had offered bursaries to two best performing pupils per class for term one in a year.
