FOOD prices have gone up due to increased demand during this festive season, a weekly market survey has revealed.

Robert Mugisa, a trader at Nakasero Market, explained: “Market prices are determined by demand. We expect to attract more customers.”

“Every festive season, there is increased purchase of food,” Paul Muyigi, another trader, confirmed.

Mugisa said prices of chicken, beef, matooke, rice and irish potatoes had increased.

There is plenty of maize, beans, tomatoes, oranges, matooke and onions due to the harvesting season, which will end in February.

However, the rains have hampered food supplies to Kampala’s major markets by making the roads impassable.

Chicken is sold at between sh7,000 and sh15,000, turkey sh20,000-30,000, while beef costs between sh3,500 and sh4,000.

A bunch of matooke is between sh7,000 and sh10,000, while maize flour and beans remained at sh700 a kilogramme.
Rice costs sh1,500 a kilogramme, while irish potatoes are from sh500 to sh600.

The traders complained that some foodstuffs were taken to southern Sudan because the prices are higher. They said this may cause food shortage after the festive season that will force prices to go up instantly.
