Councillors are gathering signatures to censure the municipal executive over allegations of incompetence.

Nineteen of the 33 councillors have already endorsed the petition
“We have lost confidence in the executive and demand that they should be censured,” read the petition.

The councillors said the executive failed to monitor council projects, resulting in a loss of sh25m due to sub-standard work on Lacor Road.
The councillors also accuse the executive of involvement in the appointment of technical staff.

They want the mayor, Christopher Acire, to relinquish his position of secretary for works. They also want the deputy mayor, Benson Kilara, to quit as well as secretaries for finance Andrew Opwonya, that of education Lillian Akech P’Oroma and that for community development Betty Atim.

Acire confirmed receiving the document on December 20, but described the move as illegal.

“The councillors were deceived that if they endorsed the petition, they would be given loans by some individuals. So far, seven of those who signed the document have withdrawn,” he explained.
Acire dismissed the allegations as baseless, saying the councillors were coerced into signing.

The speaker, Kelly Komakech, said it was improper for some of the councillors to withdraw. He said they should have waited for the motion to be tabled.
