Letter of the day

SIR — It disturbs me when I read about or hear people complaining about the government acquiring land for investment. others like Odonga Otto and Okello Okello (right) have used threatening language to anyone who dares acquire land from their region, even through lawfull means.

Such people forget that they have also acquired land in places other than their region, for instance in Kampala. Uganda’s constitution allows anyone to acqiure land anywhere in the country on the principle of willing buyer, willing seller. I am sure the government is a willing buyer.

I am aware that in developing countries like Uganda, land is a major factor of production. but if it is not fully exploited it does not bring any benefit(s) to anyone.

As someone from Nakasongola, I appeal to the government not to start another ‘war’ with the Acholi for acquiring land. Simply re-direct the investment to Nakasongola district where it is badly needed.

I personally would not mind even if all the unutilised land was taken up for investment. Our people will benefit more through employment and infrastuctural development.

Nakasongola is one of the least developed districts in Uganda. With a population of 125,297 and land area of 3,424.7 square km (2002 census), the district has vast land which is not utilised but easily accessible to the city, just 114km north of Kampala.

I even wonder why the government should be fighting land wars in other places when there is plenty of unutilised land in many places like Nakasongola. The district leaders should wake up and lobby for investment.
