He shot to fame after being declared Hairstylist of the Year at the Hair Styling Awards 2005.

With all the media attention that something like that usually brings, Ice Kenny, 30, quickly became a celebrated stylist in town.

However, no one knew that Kenny (real name Kenny Mukisa) had another talent – singing.

Though not nearly as good as his hairdressing skills, that talent, which Kenny had secretly nurtured since 2003, came to everyone’s attention this year.

Kenny recorded his first – Lady Phiona. The song is a mediocre attempt at an upbeat and hooky Kindadali (local pop) with poor vocal arrangements. Although it might not be a smashing entry, it has earned the singer the recognition he needs to kick-start a singing career.

The video of the song, which was released in July, was once used as a signature tune for Straka’s Late Show on WBS TV. It is also receiving good airplay on Record TV, UBC TV and EATV.

Unfortunately, Lady Phiona has not aroused a lot of interest in radio.

However, Kenny has used the little recognition to thrust himself into the lucrative world of live performances.

Kenny also promises much more. “I am already recording my first album at Hypercom Studio. I am working with Isaac, the guy who produced Lady Mariam’s hit, Tindatine,” he says.

However, Kenny vows never to leave the hairstyling business. “I will never forsake my clients. It has taken time to build a loyal clientele in hairdressing. Besides, hairdressing is my first love,” he asserts.

“I mainly perform at night and I work at the salon during the day,” he says.
