FOUR inmates of Kabasanda Prison in Mpigi have died of cholera, the district prisons commander has said.

Lawrence Buserezi yesterday said one inmate died last week on his way home after he had finished serving his sentence.

His body was identified by residents who carried it to the prison and later taken to Gombe mortuary.

Another inmate died on Sunday, while the other two died on Monday.

By press time, Buserezi could not identify the deceased.

Sources in the prison attribute the cholera outbreak to congestion and poor hygiene.

“The prison is meant to accommodate 50 inmates, but it currently houses more than 100. Inmates share plates which were cut out of jerrycans. Due to water scarcity, the plates are not washed,” the source said. However, Buserezi dismissed the allegations as baseless.

He said they had resolved to release some inmates on remand and transfer others to safe prisons.
